Please visit the above link and view the short video.  It’s one of the first videos I’ve created with my new wonderful ‘toy’ (Flip Mino HD digital video recorder) — and tells you about the debut of “Poetry Corner” and “Storytelling Corner” events at TESOL 2009 in Denver CO next month!

PhotoPeach! (a fun tool using photos)

February 8th, 2009

PhotoPeach! http://photopeach.com is one of my new favorite sites!

I’ve been quite busy learning through participation in online courses exploring the use of images — and exploring the pedagogy and andragogy of using various tools in the classroom/with learners completing projects.

Here’s a PhotoPeach I created about items I like to collect.

and here’s a “spiral” of the images, another great PhotoPeach feature!

What do you think of the idea of assigning learners to photograph items that they collect?

And then what? Directives for the comments on the photos could be to include certain grammar structures, or to use a minimum of three adjectives per photo? Then asking them to comment on each others’ creations?

To incorporate voice, a parallel project in Voicethread (http://voicethread.com) might be interesting as well.

delight, demonstrate, disentangle

Thanks to Chris Brogan for this excellent idea — a mantra of three words to describe one’s goals/resolutions for the year!

See http://bit.ly/7SEr  for Chris’s idea!!

I’ve come up with my three words:

delight

demonstrate

disentangle

I love words; disentangle makes me want to dance — I need more ‘dance’ in my life — movement, joy, hope, exercise, fitness, etc.  I also need to disentangle my body from sitting in front of the computer for tooooo long stretches at a time.  I need to disentangle myself from the piles and piles and piles of ‘to-do’ lists — sometimes with pragmatism, sometimes with determination and demonstrating “ta-dah! I did it!”, sometimes by letting them go undone.

Demonstrate reminds me of Ghandi’s “Be the change you want to see in the world.” quote…

Delight; I love the word delight as an outward verb — I usually use it in phrases like “I was delighted” — but what an energizing difference in reminding myself to delight others on a daily basis — love it!

delight, demonstrate, disentangle.

2009, bring it on!

Thanks again to Chris Brogan for the inspiration.

What might YOUR three words be?  Please post a reply and share.

TESOL EVOs!

January 1st, 2009 Tagged , , , ,

There is an amazing free professional development educational opportunity that arrives each year, one I’ve grown to treasure, to plan for (to carve time for in my planner)…  TESOL’s EVOs!!!

TESOL = Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

EVO = Electronic Village Online

Each year, amazing professionals in the ESOL field volunteer their time and expertise and model exemplary collaborative learning / teaching / facilitating these EVOs, focusing on topics of high interest in the field.

I have learned SO much from past EVOs, developed professional and personal friendships, greatly enriched my life!  It is especially fun to meet some of the EVO participants face-to-face at the TESOL convention (held in March or April each year, a few weeks after the EVOs end).

http://evosessions.pbwiki.com/Call_for_Participation09  is the link for this year’s EVOs (scroll down to review the full selection).  There are sessions relating to classroom video creation, photos, drama, conflict resolution, and much more!

Kudos to all of the generous professionals who are serving as co-moderators; gratitude to TESOL for its encouragement and support.

EVOs may mean more hours at my computer, but they are worthwhile hours.

new year resolutions 2009

January 1st, 2009 Tagged

I_will_try

It is believed that “going public” with one’s resolutions (I will, I will, I will) helps them to become reality.  I like the concept of goals over resolutions — the difference being that a resolution is an “I will, I will, I will!” pledge, and a goal is an “I will try, I will try, I will try!” pledge.

So here are Holly’s (my) goals for 2009, under the guise of resolutions!  [in random order]

I will try to:

* improve my personal fitness — lower my cholesterol — walk, hike, kayak/canoe, dance, stretch more often!

* write more poetry and blogs and pages toward want-to-publish books; write more personal letters to people special to me

* cook more, especially trying new international recipes

* make more time for language learning (French, Korean, basic greetings in other languages, too)

* make more time for friends and family

* reduce paperwork piles; reduce online “to-do” task lists

* make time for artistic expression and exploration (watercolor, flowers, nature art, more)

* travel! [hopefully abroad! FIND the money somewhere!]

* revisit “the H!” plans

* improve my online presence and online communication skills

* complain less.

* take more photos and upload ALL the photos I wish to share to Flickr
