new year reflections…

I’m long overdue for posting here.  I have been busier with posts at EnglishCafe.com; a great place to visit and interact!

Today, while sorting paper piles and documents saved on my C drive, I came across a note from September 7, 2001 [just days before 9/11].  I had attended a several-session career choice and development workshop series, and two of the activities had a lasting impact on me.

One activity was a survey we were asked to complete and to give to as many other folks as we could think of that knew me in a work-related capacity.  The survey was “simple” — from a large list, choose the top ten descriptiors of Holly.  From the several folks I asked to complete the survey, the top descriptors were nearly unanimous, and the top ten are as follows:

reflections Olympia Park WA

Creative

Enthusiastic

Giving

Resourceful

Competent

Idealistic

Tolerant

Sensitive

Conscientious

Emotional

I agree that they sum me up fairly accurately, and do beleive they remain true today, and would have been true 20 years ago, too.

The second activity that I find myself reflecting upon a few times a year, was a very difficult one to complete.  The choices I made, while honest, were somewhat unsettling then, and remain somewhat unsettling today.

Through a lengthy, thorough, intense self-analysis project, we determined our top five values, and then had to rank them.  Here is what I determined I “need” for a meaningful, rewarding work environment:

Service (to give service), variety, integrity, creativity, recognition.

I liked that money/financial reward was far down my list of priorities (although my husband often wishes it were higher on my list!), but I remain unsettled by my need for recognition.  I would like myself much better if that weren’t such a need.

But, all-in-all, it isn’t such a bad list…
