Saving money, saving gas — what would you recommend?
“Smart ways to save on gas” (an article in Parade Magazine July 6, 2008, written by Earl Swift)
I found irony with this article published on an American patriotic weekend, irony because of the omissions from this list of “SMART ways to SAVE on gas.”
I challenge you to think for a moment of modern-day life for many in the USA. If you were to brainstorm what some of the top suggestions might be for “SMART ways to SAVE on gas,” what might you come up with?
The first two that occurred to me are nowhere to be found on the published list. To me, this is a telling example of cultural attitude shift. American culture (and not the best side of it)…
The two best tips/ideas that occurred to me:
1) Use public transportation whenever warranted.
2) Carpool more often.
The article’s suggestions:
1) Drive intelligently a. Avoid aggressive driving b. Control your speed c. Lighten your load d. Don’t idle
2) Get your car in shape a. Tune up b. Use the right motor oil c. Take care of your tires d. If you have two cars, use the one with better gas mileage
3) Cheat the wind a. Roll up your windows b. Maintain a sleek profile

What do you think? (I left a post on the Parade site’s blog today, too)
